Maybe you start out with a budget or just go shopping to ‘browse’. Do you end up overspending or buying things you don’t need? If the answer is yes, then you will want to take a step back and take a look at the reasons you overspend.
Overspending can cause more damage to your budget than you may in think. it may start off small. But those little small changes can end up being one BIG problem in the end. In fact, it can cause a downward spin and lead your “budget” down a path to near destruction.

The next time you find yourself overspending, take a look at how are you are feeling. Many people shop when they are stressed or in a down mood. Emotions are definitely tied to overspending, so be aware of this. Ask yourself if you need the items you are going to buy. Maybe you need a friend to listen to you instead of making a purchase.
We can all get caught up in the need to have things NOW. We are surrounded by messages all of the time that say we deserve this, or should have that. It is really easy to get stuck in this cycle of buying things all the time. Just realizing that you are doing this can help to break the habit.

Forgetting to be Thankful
When we forget to be thankful for what we have, we are more likely to find ourselves overspending. Feeling thankful makes us more fulfilled and less likely to look for gratification in outside things and purchases. Taking a few moments out of your day to focus on what you are grateful for can put things into perspective and help you break out of the overspending rut.
It may sound strange, but if you are disorganized and have lots of clutter, your mind actually wants more stuff. If you get organized and tidy you actually can keep the urge to splurge away. When you are in a cluttered environment, you feel out of control and buying something gives you the illusion of being back in control.
How We Can Control Our Overspending
None of these reasons for spending are necessarily bad, but the truth is that we will always be able to find a reason to spend money. We simply use money as an outlet. In order to stop the cycle of overspending we need to sit down and have heart to heart talk with ourselves.
BE HONEST. What is causing us to do the things we do? In spite of our past mistakes we can over come them and curb our spending habits. Look at your need vs your wants. We often want more than what we truly need. I need to be reminded of this often. It isn’t easy when the world we live in is all about things.
Let’s stop focusing on things and redirect them back to what is really important.
