Store-purchased Playdough is a lot of fun to have around the house. However, it is also costly. Making your own version at home will save you time from running out to the store and it will save you money.

Also, those containers are small and if your kids leave the lids off those tricky to snap-on lids, it dries out. What a waste!

This recipe calls for simple ingredients that you will most likely already have on hand. This makes this Playdough a perfect natural play option. And, of course, this homemade play dough is non-toxic too.

Homemade Playdough Ingredients

Using just basic ingredients, you can make any color of Playdough for a fraction of the price. I often will add in a few drops of essential oils to make it more festive. For example: for the month of December I will add peppermint oil.

  • 500 grams flour, pre-baked
  • 367 grams of table salt
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cup warm water
  • Gel food coloring of your choice
  • Optional: A few drops of your favorite essential oils

Notes: Pre-bake flour at 350°F for 7-10 minutes, or until the temperature of the flour reaches 160°F.

Best Way To Make Easiest Playdough Recipe

This set of instructions will make 4 different colors of Playdough balls. For best results, before your kids play with their new Playdough, make sure they wash their hands well. This will inhibit future bacteria growth.

STEP ONE: Mix 125 grams of flour and 91 grams of salt in a large mixing bowl. Please note: you must weigh out your measurements using a kitchen scale. Once dry ingredients have been combined, then set aside.

STEP TWO: Add 6 tablespoons of warm water and 1/2 tablespoon vegetable oil in another bowl. Then add a teaspoon of desired food coloring. Whisk until the gel has dissolved.

STEP THREE: Add the wet ingredients to your flour and salt mixture. Mix until combined and dough starts to form.

STEP FOUR: Transfer dough to a floured surface. Knead. Add flour or water as needed.

STEP FIVE: Repeat the steps above three more times for each color desired.

How to Store Playdough

Keep it in an airtight container or in a zipper bag and place them in the fridge. It should stay soft for at least 2-3 months! That’s a long time. Do not store on your countertop at room temperature. This will absolutely ensure bacterial growth.

When this is chilled, this recipe will get a little hard, but that soft texture will return after a few rounds of kneading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use baby oil instead of vegetable oil?

Yes! If you don’t have vegetable oil on hand, you can certainly use baby oil. Plus, no need to add in essential oils, because baby oil smells great. Side note: you can also use coconut oil. It is all about personal preference.

How do I remove this playdough from carpet, upholstery, or fabric?

Sometimes this fun activity can lead to a stick mess. To remove Playdough the easiest way is to let it dry out completely. Then using a stiff brush, loosen any stuck-on Playdough. If it gets into clothes, simply pop it into the washing machine, because it is made with food, it will be washed clean.
