Cookies And Cream Buttercream Frosting Recipe – Homemade
Prep Time: 15 Minutes Total Time: 15 Minutes Servings: 4 Cups |
I can easily say that cookies pair nicely with buttercream frosting. This is my (SHHHH) secret recipe for one of my favorite frostings. Not so secret anymore. This is my most requested dessert frosting that I make.
If you didn’t know already, one of my side hobbies is baking, but not just baking…….cake decorating too. Baking is my creative outlet. Plus, it curves my huge sweet tooth.
These cookies and cream frosting can use it on your favorite cake or cupcake recipe. HECK, you can even grab a spoon and eat it as is. This is how wonderful this frosting tastes. Life is full of hard decisions. In trying to perfect this recipe, I generally stick with only one store brand version; Great Value from Walmart or the original brand of Oreos.
I have tried other store brands hoping to find a cheaper version of the original Oreo Cookies, but the only one that compares and can keep up with the flavor we love is Great Value Brand.
You will also want to stay away from the double stuffed versions as they will take away from the cookie taste and more or less mute the taste. Believe me, I have experimented with this recipe (over and over again). This frosting pairs well with this delicious chocolate cake recipe.
What is buttercream frosting?
Buttercream icing is exactly as it sounds. It is an icing or frosting made with a base of butter. This base is then creamed with sugar and flavoring. You can not substitute butter with margarine.
Margarine lacks solid components of fats. Manufacturers make margarine from plant-based oils, such as canola oil, palm fruit oil, and soybean oil. Which will take on a different texture and unwelcomed consistency when making frosting.
Ingredients Needed to Make Cookies and Cream Frosting
- 1 Cream Cheese, 8 oz brick – softened
- 1 Stick Unsalted Butter – softened
- 2 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
- 1 Pinch Salt
- 3 3/4 Cups Confectioners Sugar
- 1 โ 2 tbsp Heavy Whipping Cream
- 1 1/2 Cups Finely Crumbled Chocolate Sandwich Cookes
Crushing Sandwich Cookies
I just use my food processor to finely chop the Oreos into crumbs, but a rolling pin and zipper bag (freezer works better) will work just as well.
Just be sure if you are planning to pipe the frosting that the Oreo pieces are very fine and the tip you use is large enough that a larger piece of the cookie won’t get stuck in the tip because it’s a pain unblocking it later.
How to make Cookies and Cream Buttercream Frosting
STEP ONE: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and cream cheese together using a stand or electric mixer. Combine until this mixture is smooth, creamy, and light.
STEP TWO: Then slowly add in powdered sugar, alternating with 1 -2 tablespoons of heavy whipping cream. Beating again until combined. Add in vanilla and salt. Now you have a fluffy buttercream.
STEP THREE: Lastly, stir in the crushed Oreos and then use this frosting to frost cake or cupcakes. Donโt you just want to eat it with a spoon? Try hard to resist! Pinch me! This Frosting is seriously a dream come true.
Enjoy!
Tips for Frosting Your Desserts
- If youโre using the Oreo frosting for cupcakes, be sure to use a large open tip when piping on top of the cupcakes. If you use a smaller tip, expect to have chunks of cookies clogging up your pipping tip.
- If you think you have created a frosting that is much too thick, you can thin it out by slowly adding in heavy cream or milk. I would add no more than a tablespoon at a time and test as you go.
- If, on the other hand, your cookies and cream buttercream frosting are too thin, simply add in extra powdered sugar. This recipe is very forgiving.
