2024 Best Black Paint Colors for Kitchen Cabinets

Everywhere you look online, painting doors, walls and now cabinets black are all the rage. Dark colors present us with different contrasts. In other words, we present to you some black magic kitchen home vibes.

Black is undoubtedly one of the most popular shades for any front door. However, todayโ€™s trends have us seeing black as an accent wall, in the dining room and now on kitchen cabinets and islands โ€“ even entire exteriors are painted black.

Which I love. The fact is that black paint color can turn any space into a classy look. To me, they can feel glamorous and moody. Just like white paint (and there is no pure white) they do not create all black shades of color equal. And depending on your space, it can feel way too dark or not enough.

Did you know there are currently 16 black paint shades on the market? You get to view those with blue undertones, cool undertones, and dark undertones. What is the difference? You will see. But my first question is, would you rather have a soft black or a darker shade of black?

Now, instead of having to comb through each. I did it for you. Here are my top favorite shades of black for this year.

Iron Ore By Sherwin Williams

Sherwin-Williams describes this shade of black as Iron Ore. It is a a cool, deep, and mysterious charcoal that can lend an air of sophistication when used sparingly in well-lit spaces or on exteriors.

And it is a stunning black paint that is versatile and will look gorgous in your own home, check out how @thriftingdecorandmore styles Iron Ore with pretty florals and plenty of natural textures and materials for a cozy, albeit moody, home vibe.

But when we are talking kitchens, Sherman Williams Iron Ore looks equally good and is a perfect option.

Pro Tip

Remember, the key to finding the perfect paint color for any room is to test it first, in all kinds of light.

Flint by Benjamin Moore

Flint by Benjamin Moore is a cooler charcoal that brings a decidedly updated take on neutrals to your home.

It is best described as a cool charcoal that presents a unique alternative to your basic neutral. Picture this black color with beautiful brushed nickel accents. You can see it being used in a kitchen below it is a soft black. It is an absolute top pick for this year.

Onyx by Benjamin Moore

Benjamin Moore Onyx is described as, โ€œpart of a collection of bold, saturated colors that brings spaces to life for those looking to illuminate their world with pure, extraordinary colorโ€.

It is the darkest of all shades of black you will see here. However, Onyx is an off-black, which means itโ€™s black, but not true, 100% pitch black. You can see below how beautifully it pairs with white walls in a kitchen. Another great option to choose from.

Limousine Leather by Behr

The great thing about Behr’s Limousine Leather is that it is a true black that does not carry any undertones of blues or browns. This color is fantastic because it feels bold and crisp with a timeless and sophisticated edge. It really adds a bold dose of drama to any space you apply it in!

This black paint comes in right behind Oynx black in terms of shading. It is stunning and classic. It has to be one of my favorite black paint colors. I say it is a great choice.

How to choose the right black paint color for kitchen cabinets

If I could give you one good tip for choosing the right paint color for your cabinets, it is to try it out first. Don’t just rely on the tiny paint swatch you get from the hardware store. I would suggest purchasing a few pieces of white poster board at the Dollar Store and painting each one with the paint samples you have picked out.

Then once those mega sample-size paint chips are dry, attach them to your existing cabinets using painterโ€™s tape. Don’t just put them up for a few hours, keep them up for several days, making sure to check out the color in both daylight and at night.

It is important to see this dark paint color in a lot of natural light. I also found it important to move the color all around the room, even near appliances and backsplash material.

If you donโ€™t want to go out and buy samples, you consider ordering peel-and-stick paint samples from Samplize. They include colors from Sherman Willians, Benjamin Moore, and more.

Paint Samples

Paint samples from Samplize will allow you to try different colors in your space. They allow you to move the color around and to see them in different lighting. Plus, as a bonus, you can reuse them a bunch of times. Itโ€™s a foolproof way to find the perfect paint color.

What is the best paint finish for black kitchen cabinets?

You are looking for durability when it comes to finishes. And because it is in the kitchen, you will want to be able to wipe it down easily without leaving marks.  It is important to make sure your paint is acrylic or enamel, not vinyl. These types of paints are durable and easy to clean up.

I chose BEHR Urethane Alkyd Semi-Gloss Enamel paint. It provides the performance and durability of a traditional oil-based paint with the ease of use and convenience of being water-based paint. Choosing a semi-gloss will help with clean-ups and spills. High gloss can make knicks and scratches show up easily.

I would stay away from a matte finish. Though it is without shine, it will pick up lots of imperfections. This is not how you imagined the focal point of your kitchen to be seen.

Black cabinets will give your kitchen a contrast. This eye-catching home decor move can reimagine the landscape of your kitchen. We hope this blog post or top picks helped you decide on your color schemes.
