Keeping up with everything that comes with family life can feel like a full-time job. Between school, activities, meals, homework, and everything else on the daily to-do list, I’m always looking for simple ways to make our home run a little more smoothly.
One of those ways is getting the kids involved with household chores. I believe children of all ages can learn responsibility by helping with age-appropriate tasks around the house. The trick is finding a system that makes it easy for everyone to know what needs to be done.
That’s where these DIY Chore Magnets for Kids come in. Instead of relying on a traditional chore chart, these colorful magnets give kids a fun, hands-on way to keep track of their responsibilities. There’s something satisfying about moving a chore from “to do” to “done”—and honestly, I think adults enjoy checking things off their lists just as much as kids do!
With a few simple supplies and the free printable included below, you can create your own chore magnet system and make helping around the house a little more fun.

How To Make Chore Magnets

STEP ONE: First, start by Printing this chore template printable. The hardest part is deciding which chores you want to include in your magnets. You may want to print multiple sheets.

STEP TWO: Next, cut out each chore you would like to include on your magnet. You can certainly hand-cut each piece using a scissor, but I prefer using my paper cutter. It will allow each piece to have nice straight-cut lines.

STEP THREE: Gather your items needed for the pod mod portion of this craft. To protect your work surface and to make cleanup a lot easier, it would be beneficial to place old newspapers on your table.

STEP FOUR: On the flat part of each gem, spread a thin layer of Mod Podge.

STEP FIVE: Place a chore image face down. You may need to use a pair of tweezers to do this.

STEP SIX: Next, seal a top layer of Mod Podge over the image. Then allow to dry. This will only take a few hours to fully dry. I would recommend waiting it out. If your glue is not dry, you will run into issues with your magnetic tape.
STEP SEVEN: Then attach the magnets. Magnetic tape is my preferred way to go! You can cut it to size and it is strong. Even though the tape is self-adhesive, I like to dab a bit of hot glue on it to ensure it stays on the magnet.

Creating a Chore Magnet System
There are several simple ways to use these DIY chore magnets, so choose the setup that works best for your family and your space. The goal is to create a system that is easy for kids to understand and satisfying to use.
One option is to add a photo or name for each child to your refrigerator. Place their chore magnets nearby, and have them move each magnet next to their name as the chore is completed. At the end of the day, you can easily see which tasks are finished and which still need to be done.
Another option is to place all of the chore magnets next to your child’s picture at the beginning of the day. As each task is completed, the child can move or remove that magnet. This gives kids a visual reminder of what they need to accomplish and the satisfaction of seeing their list get smaller.
You can also create separate sections for “To Do” and “Done” using a magnetic board, cookie sheet, or the side of your refrigerator. There’s no single right way to organize your chore magnets—the best system is the one your family will actually use consistently.
