How To Make DIY Mosquito Repellent Using Essential Oils

Many years ago, I came up with this DIY Mosquito Repellent spray. We were at a friend’s house enjoying a backyard BBQ. I sprayed all the kids down with it. As the parents sat talking, we watched our kids.

As they were playing, a parent pointed out that everywhere the kids went, it was like a bubble of no bugs. I looked up and was amazed. Yes, it was buggy out, but the kids were not affected.

Now that my son is much older and enjoys going fishing, he takes this bug spray with him. His friends even request this bug spray over the store-purchased one. Because it works and it smells good.

And because everyone has been requesting my mosquito repellent recipe, I thought it best to FINALLY write it down and make it public.

Why Does This Combination of Essential Oils Work

The reason these work? The key to avoiding mosquitoes isn’t pushing them away—it’s preventing them from being drawn to you in the first place. These essential oils are found to be a mask for the odors that female mosquitoes are attuned to when searching for their next meal.

Materials Needed To Make

  • Eucalyptus Oil – Not only repels mosquitoes but also other small flying insects as well.
  • Lavender OilLavender not only has relaxing, calming qualities and smells fantastic, it is also helpful for repelling different types of small flying bugs and gnats.
  • Peppermint Oil – Mosquitoes hate the smell of mint. If you notice peppermint plants outside, you will also notice fewer bugs.
  • Eucalyptus Citriodora Oil AKA Lemon Eucalyptus The Center for Disease Control recognizes this oil as effective as DEET. Read more here.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar – Yes, you can substitute for distilled white vinegar. Mosquitoes hate the smell of vinegar.

How Long Does This Repellent Last

My honest opinion. I just don’t know, but my rule of thumb is once the fragrance is gone, the repellency is gone. I typically don’t wait this long and make sure we apply often, especially if you our sweaty.
